Well, hold on to your pants kids, it’s about to get crazy in here…What the hell happened on Kickstarter this week? It’s like everyone made a decision to get everything out before the end of June. This week there is a ton of stuff for us to talk about, so without further ado, we should probably get on it!

Raccoon Tycoon – from the art to the game play this game looks pleasant in the best way possible. The art is the real stand out, but not far behind that is the fact that this is a comprehensive campaign. The team at Forbidden Games have ensured that there are plenty of previews and playthroughs on the campaign straight away, which means it is far easier to make a decision on it. This game is an economic/resource building game with a great theme to it and I would highly recommend it from what I have seen.

Tang Garden – The Zen and calmness of both Tang Garden and Raccoon Tycoon is what really draws me to both of them this week, although they are super different games. Tang Garden is a tile placement/Euro game with a great Chinese inspired art and theming. A ton of stretch goals have already been unlocked, so the base game will come with a bunch of extra tiles and miniatures. Lots of chatter online about this one, I am looking forward to hopefully being able to lay my hands on a copy.

Overturn: Rising Sands – this looks incredible, and it has CROCODILE MINIATURES! The game itself is tactical, turn based with semi co-op play. Now I have put it on the list for it’s production value and it’s looks, however it really is a matter of time whether it lives up to this hype. This Kickstarter has a very strong ‘Zombicide’ feel to it, in both game and in the campaign itself – there are tons of add-ons and extras. Will quantity also equal quality when it gets to tables? Unfortunately, there is only one preview up at the moment, I hope that we see more about how this game plays before too long.

UPDATE: Please consider dropping your pledge for Overturn – there have been numerous issues with this campaign. There are major issues with copy pasting rule books and company info, the company are not who they say they are and all miniatures are in CGI render form (ie there is no actual product).

Special mention: So Long, My World – The world is coming to an end and soon you will lose your life, how will you spend the last few hours? So Long, My World is a simultaneous action strategy card game with a unique theme.

It has been a massive week for tabletop Kickstarters this week, so I have attempted to do a bit of a round up, but I am sure that I have probably missed a few! Feel free to correct us in comments about what you feel should have made it on to this weeks list!

Queen Games are re-releasing a few Stefan Feld classics – Amerigo and Merlin, for reprints on Kickstarter. Amerigo, in particular, is quite highly rated and is currently sitting at around #260 on BGG. To get just Amerigo, plus some bonuses, it will be around $70. The 2013 version is still available in Australia, however is out of print and won’t come with the bonuses. Further, because this is being made by a publisher, the expected release time in November of this year.

Solomon Kane has been hovering on The Hotness on BGG for a few weeks now, and the time has come for the release. This game looks incredible, from the art to the sculpting of the pieces. It is also testament to the fact that high quality games are now costing more and more as hobbyist delve further in. Unlike the Zombicide effect, though, the developers haven’t gone for oodles of add-ons – so the around $185 (with postage) won’t blow out with a Pledge Manager that means adding on another couple of hundred dollars. I really like this one for the dark theme and the incredible sculpts in particular.

From the designer Jeff Beck of Hardback comes a 2-player game Getaway Driver – with art from Ryan Goldsberry (Burgle Bros) this competitive asymmetric game has you playing the role of Police or ‘The Driver’ who will pulls stunts to get away. A unique mechanic in this game means that the things on your table (the edge of the table, a water glass) all form part of the obstacles in the game itself. This game has already well met it’s target but with a $35 price tag for Australians, this should well and truly go above and beyond that. Another great thing is that you can pick up the PnP for around $4.

Gorus Maximus gets the nod this week as well for taking a simple trick taking mechanic and turning it up to 11 through art and theme. Not to mentioned that this will get to you, posted for a little less than $30 (or $3 PnP). The art is by acclaimed illustrator Kwanchai Moriya of Dinosaur Island fame, and straddles the line between cartoon and hardcore gore. This little game looks super fun and looking forward to more of what this company puts out.

Special mention this week to Solar City, brought out by The Games Factory who also publish big hits like Dominion and Roll for the Galaxy.

Competition has been fierce this year for Kickstarters of the week, but it seems that it has slowed down a little this week. This isn’t to say that there isn’t quality on the market, as you can see below:

Red Alert – Space Fleet Warfare – designed by Richard Borg (Command and Colors, Memoir ’44, Battlelore), this game hit it’s goal within the day of release. The game is a space warfare (hence the name) game based on the Command and Colours combat system. The only criticism that I have of this game is it’s price. To get the base game you are looking at $158 AUD plus shipping.

Neta – Tanka – a worker placement and resource management game with a Native American theme. Each player is vying for their place as the next leader of their tribe. Funded in 24 minutes on Kickstarter and 1-4 players, this seems like it will appeal to a lot of people. Only around $70 plus postage to here in Australia.

Mythic Battles: Pantheon 1.5 – Well, I complained about the cost of Red Alert a minute ago and here we are with Mythic Battles…it will cost you around the same as Red Alert at $158 for the base game, but if you want to go all in, it will $700+ for all expansions etc. I love the miniatures for this game, although not so sure about the game play – there is a big discrepancy on BGG between the weighted ranking of 6.9 and the community ranking in the 8’s. Not sure how this will translate to playing, but gosh is it pretty.

Special mention – Until the Bitter End – a simple 1-2 player combat game based on WWII that is print and play only – at $7 this has already reached it target (several times over) and I can see it earning even more. Proof that games don’t need to be massively in-depth and immersive for players to seek them out.

Anything else that you are particularly interested in this week?

So the time rolls around again to choose the best Kickstarters that have been released this week. Of course there is a ton on offer, but only the best will do!

Heroes of Land, Air and Sea – This was massive when it first hit the market and has had a lot of hype when it hit KS again this week. There is an extra expansion (Pestilence), plus the ability to purchase the base game. To purchase everything you will be looking at around $220 (although postage is only about $40 for that much product – almost worth it just for that). This game has rave reviews, so be sure to check out their campaign and see if it has what you want.

Infected: The Carrier – this dark social deduction game looks incredible, especially from the art. This expansion adds on to Infected with several different characters which change the mechanics of the game to make it somewhat more challenging by the looks of it.

Vast – The Mysterious Manor – The follow up to Vast: The Crystal Caverns looks just as good as it’s predecessor. Given the popularity of the original, this new stand alone game is definitely worth a good look.

Seems that recently I have been fanboying over Renegade Games releases, with the love of Raider of the North Sea and now Ex Libris , designed by Adam P. McIver. I played this at a games night, everyone else had sat down at tables that were far more complex games and I just wasn’t up for that, so I was left with the Ex Libris crew, a group of rag tag ‘I don’t want to play Euros tonight’ gang. The thing about being ‘forced’ to a table is often the fun won’t be as intense, but that wasn’t the case with Ex Libris at all, I could easily find myself re-entering the library at any time, probably preferring it over other things now that I have given it a go.

What makes Ex Libris so lovable? Well, it could be the Meeples that are all shaped in the portrait of your player (Golem, Witch, Goblin etc), or it could be the puns on the spines of the book, or maybe it is just the fact that this is a great fun game that runs exceptionally smoothly after only a few rounds of play.

The goal of the game is to have the highest scoring library (or cards) at the end of the game. Scoring depends on the type of books, the structure of the bookshelf and whether you have used any banned books. Each player has a specific character that they play, which also has a special ability that can be activated once per round.

Essentially what you are aiming to do is build a library of cards in front of you that complies to several conditions:

It has structure – that is is a contiguous grid of cards;

It is alphabetical;

It doesn’t contain too many banned books;

It contains plenty of the books that you have been allocated as your ‘special’ books;

Although I was thoroughly beaten every time that I played, I found Ex Libris to be a super enjoyable game to get to the table. It is a relatively quick play (easily coming in under an hour for 4 players), the artwork is fantastic and it straddles that fine line between between too simple and too brain burning. Whilst you have plenty to think about – card placement, worker placement, alphabetical order – it never becomes overwhelming and I actually found the cognitive effort in the pleasant range, not having to think too hard, but also my mind wasn’t wandering either.

If you like worker placement, looking for a good family game for kids 10+ (or those who are a little more advanced in board games) or are looking for a game that appeals to the heavy and light gamers alike, I would highly recommend Ex-Libris.

You can buy Ex-Libris by Renegade Games here at Mighty Ape

Renegade Games, makers of some of the best new games on the market (check out Raiders of the North sea review here) have announced an expansion for Clank! In! Space! called Apocalypse! The expansion is designed by Paul Dennen (of the original Clank!) and will be released in August of this year, hopefully hitting shelves and online stores in Australia pretty soon after.

From the publisher

The deck-building adventure of Clank! In! Space! continues. Small pockets of resistance continue to oppose Lord Eradikus, but the evil cyborg now plots to wipe them out with one grand and wicked scheme!

Thwart the efforts of Lord Eradikus!
Reap the rewards of noble (and sometimes reluctant) heroism!
Save the galaxy…. And get rich in the process!

Maybe you can avert the Apocalypse! (Or at least escape with the treasure while someone else does!)

Again, so many games hit Kickstarter on a weekly basis that it is hard to cut it down to just a few, so we have made our best efforts to whittle down the best of and most interesting projects.

Imaginarium – This is the new game from Bruno Cathala (and Florian Sirieix) which has also hit the selves in some places in Europe. Imaginarium is a strategy/development game with a steampunk type theme, the looks and art alone are very cool and combine that with a game of the year winner in Cathala it seems to be a winner.

OrcQuest Warpath – Orcs seem to be a bit of a theme at the moment, and this one seems to be the best one on Kickstarter at the moment, a co-op dungeon crawler with a less than 1 hour playtime, what’s not to like?

Posthuman Saga – The art alone could sell this one, in addition to the fact that it is a game with miniatures that clocks in at under $100. This is a strategic survival game in a post apocalyptic world that has immersive story telling combined with euro-style gameplay. I will be going in on this one.

Gaming, like any hobby, can have a tendency to get away on you when it comes to finances. One day you are browsing a games store and pick up an entry level game, the next you are waiting to snipe your 15th copy of Munchkin on ebay, your house now filled with boardgames and the memories of a simpler time.

So how do you keep this hobby in check and not break the bank? Here are our top tips:

Join a gaming group – Meetup is a great place to meet people who share your interests and who come ready made with a bunch of games. These groups are usually free, or a small donation, therefore you can expose yourself to a bunch on different games without having to put your hand in your pocket too deeply;

Start your own gathering – from your meetup you can find the people that you want to play with, add in some friends or a partner and there’s another playing group. Work out the group’s interests and a budget and either everyone can chip in, or everyone buys a single copy of a different game to bring along. It’s really not worth having a group that has 4 copies of Rising Sun in it, so the money can he spread around to different things.

Shop the sales – Mighty Ape and Ozgameshop often have sales with high percentage discounts, where you can save up to 30-40% off regular prices. My suggestion is to keep a wishlist of the games that you want and keep an eye on the sales to jump on them when they come around.

Play Online – There are a couple of places that you can play boardgames online. Sure they may scratch that tactile itch of picking up meeples and placing them, but playing online can get you trialling some games that you may otherwise not have bought. Tabletopia and Boardgame Arena both offer browser gaming, in addition to Tabletop Simulator which you can play via the Steam platform.

PnP – Print and Play is the other option to keeping costs down, you can find plenty of resources for the best PnP games around to print out at home and trial (or even sleeve them and keep them permanently). A lot of small solo games will also offer this as a free/low cost alternative to backing their Kickstarter as well.

So those are our tips, what are your tips to keep the cost of gaming down, while still being able to play the best games out?

Here are our choices of the week in Kickstarter, but with so much to choose, it is hard to narrow it down to just a few!

Black Rose Wars – is a tactical fighting game with miniatures that was funded in 10 minutes – it is currently at 898% of it’s goal and is well worth checking out. People are comparing this one to the hype of the most recent Zombicide Invaders campaign. As of writing there are 11 days left in the campaign.

Court of the Dead – this competitive/coop game is getting lots of attention at the moment, and now has plenty of premium stretch goals added to the base game. Great looking miniatures, be sure to check it out.

Lincoln – from Martin Wallace, the designer of Brass, Steam and Gettysburg, comes a new 2 player strategic card based war game. If this is anything like Wallace’s other work it will be well worth checking out. Currently has been funded so will go to production.

In the United States there is a massive amount of places that you can buy games from, whether it is from swap meets, Amazon or from your friendly local games store (FLGS) – but unfortunately that isn’t the case here in Australia. The Australia takes well and truly comes into force when it comes to buying boardgames for a few reasons 1. They are usually made a long way away and therefore shipping costs and 2. They are usually pretty bulky to move and store for relatively low profit – therefore only speciality stores will hold them.

So, to where to find games in Australia?

Some of the best places are online sellers with no physical storefront (thereby no sales staff or commercial rent), most of these can be found through OzGamefinder.com which is a site that scrapes all the best prices from all over the web in order to get you the best price. You may find some items on the Amazon store, but much like the rest of Amazon Australia you will probably not find the greatest range or the cheapest prices, especially on boardgames.

A few of the best that I have found so far though are Games Empire, who do have a store in Castle Hill and great customer service and have a flat fee rate for their shipping all over Australia. The second is Ozgameshop who are a UK based company that offer great prices and free shipping for the vast majority of their items. In addition to this there is Mighty Ape, who often have great deals and prices, I would highly recommend getting on their mailing list so that you can be first in line when sales come on.

Other places to buy boardgames and card games in most capital cities is stores with actual shops in chopping centres. There are a few big names like Good Games and Mind Games that you will often find around and these are particularly good for going in and speaking to staff who can give you some good advice about what you may like in particular. My experience has been that staff in these stores are particularly approachable and that they really know their stuff when it comes to helping you out.

I would recommend not to buy through places like eBay (and Alibaba) as you will often find that there are really cheap prices on a few games here and there. The reason that they are really cheap is that they are counterfeits – usually found with games that are primarily built out of cardboard and paper only.
